How to Apply for the Colombia Digital Nomad Visa

Step-by-step Colombia Visa V Nómadas Digitales application via Cancillería online portal — realistic timeline, required documents, and common gotchas.

Colombia's nomad visa application is entirely online through the Cancillería portal. No consulate visits, no apostilled documents in most cases (just certified translations). Decisions typically arrive within 30 days, making this one of the faster formal nomad visa processes globally.

Step 1 — Prepare income documentation

Gather the last 3 months of bank statements showing consistent monthly deposits above the ~$909 threshold. If you are an employee, request a letter from your employer in English or Spanish confirming remote work, contract terms, and continued employment. If self-employed, prepare 3–5 client contracts or service agreements.

Step 2 — Obtain certified Spanish translations

Employment contracts, client agreements, and other English-language documents need translation by a traductor oficial certified by the Colombian government. Cost: $30–80 per document. Allow 1–2 weeks for translation and notary.

Step 3 — Secure initial accommodation proof

Book at minimum a 2-week hotel or rental reservation in Colombia for the initial stay. This is sufficient for the visa application; full 2-year housing arrangements come later.

Step 4 — Purchase health insurance

Coverage valid in Colombia for the full 2-year visa term. International policies (Safetywing, Cigna, IMG) or Colombian providers (Sura, Colsanitas) both work. Must cover medical emergencies and repatriation. Cost: $50–100/month.

Step 5 — Create Cancillería online account

Go to www.cancilleria.gov.co and register. Navigate to "Visas" → "Visa V" → "Nómadas Digitales." The portal is available in English and Spanish.

Step 6 — Complete the application form

Fill in:

  • Personal information (passport data, contact details)
  • Intended address in Colombia (initial hotel or rental)
  • Purpose of stay (digital nomad / remote work)
  • Expected duration (2 years default)
  • Employment/self-employment information

Step 7 — Upload documents

Required:

  • Passport bio page (color scan)
  • Recent passport photo (3×4 cm, white background, digital)
  • Bank statements (last 3 months)
  • Employment contract / client agreements (with Spanish translations)
  • Motivation letter (1–2 paragraphs in Spanish)
  • Health insurance policy
  • Accommodation proof

Step 8 — Pay the application fee

Fee approximately $223 USD, paid by credit card through the portal. Non-refundable.

Step 9 — Wait for decision (~30 days)

Colombia Cancillería processes in 30 calendar days for most applicants. You will receive email notifications as the application progresses. If additional documents are requested, respond promptly — the clock resets but each extension adds delay.

Step 10 — Receive the digital visa

Upon approval, you will receive the visa electronically as a PDF document. Print copies and keep the digital version accessible for travel. The visa is valid for immediate entry to Colombia.

Step 11 — Register in Colombia upon arrival

Within 15 days of arrival in Colombia:

  • Obtain a Colombian foreigner ID (Cédula de Extranjería) from Migración Colombia.
  • Register your address and biometric data.
  • Fee: ~$70 for the Cédula.

Step 12 — Register tax residency (if applicable)

If you anticipate becoming Colombian tax resident (staying 183+ days in any 365-day period), register with DIAN (Colombian tax authority) and obtain a RUT (tax ID). Your Colombian CPA, if engaged, handles this step.

Common rejection reasons

  • Income below 3× minimum wage threshold in any of the last 3 months.
  • Non-translated documents. English-only contracts or bank statements are typically rejected.
  • Missing accommodation proof. Must show at least initial 2-week lodging.
  • Insufficient health insurance — gaps in coverage or missing repatriation cause rejection.
  • Prior immigration violations in Colombia — overstays, overstay-related deportations.
