Cost of Living in Malta for Digital Nomads

Four-tier monthly budgets for Valletta, Sliema, St Julian's, Gozo with current rent, coworking, food, and transport data for 2026.

Malta is the most expensive EU nomad visa destination by cost of living relative to size. Valletta, Sliema, and St Julian's make up a single compact urban zone with rents equivalent to Madrid central. Gozo (the quieter second island) runs 25–40% cheaper. The compensating factor: English everywhere, Mediterranean climate year-round, and short commutes (the whole country is 27 km long).

Rent

Furnished one-bedroom monthly (early 2026):

  • Valletta old town: €1,100–1,800
  • Sliema (seafront): €1,300–2,200
  • St Julian's (Paceville area): €1,200–2,000
  • Msida / Gżira (just west of Sliema): €900–1,400
  • Mdina / Rabat (inland, historic): €700–1,200
  • Gozo (Victoria / coastal): €650–1,100

Summer premium adds 15–25% to most rentals. The Maltese rental market favors 12-month leases heavily — short-term is expensive. Mid-term platforms (Spotahome, Flatio) are 20–40% above local market for equivalent listings.

Other recurring costs

  • Coworking: €180–250/month hot desk; €300–400 dedicated. Major: SOHO Office Space (Sliema), Quad Business Towers (St Julian's), Uncommon (Valletta).
  • Mobile: €15–25 for 25–40 GB (GO, Epic, Melita).
  • Home internet: €25–40 for 500 Mbps–1 Gbps fiber (Malta has among the best broadband in the EU).
  • Public transport pass: Personal Tallinja card — free public bus for residents (a unique perk). Other: Bolt / eCabs rideshare €4–10 per ride.
  • Groceries, single: €250–380/month.
  • Restaurant meal: €15–25 casual; €30–55 nicer.
  • Coffee: €2–3.50.
  • Gym: €40–80/month.
  • Private health insurance: €50–150/month (local and international providers).

Picking your location

  • Sliema — seafront, largest expat population, most restaurant/cafe density, premium rent. Default for most newcomers.
  • Valletta — small old-town capital, most beautiful, limited grocery and daily convenience. Best as a short-term base.
  • St Julian's / Paceville — nightlife-heavy, gaming-industry nomad presence, loud at night. Balance with Spinola Bay side.
  • Msida / Gżira — cheaper than Sliema with short commute; growing nomad presence.
  • Mdina / Rabat — inland, quieter, more affordable, slower pace. Less foot traffic but beautiful historic architecture.
  • Gozo — second island, separate ferry, markedly quieter and cheaper, better for slow work. Ferry to Malta ~25 minutes; a nomad community exists but smaller than Malta's.

Data sources

Maltese rent has risen 15–25% since 2022 driven by remote-worker demand and limited building. Confirm current rates before committing to a long lease.
