Cost of Living in Mexico for Digital Nomads

Four-tier monthly budgets for Mexico City, Guadalajara, Mérida, Playa del Carmen, and Oaxaca with current rent, coworking, and grocery data.

Mexico is one of the steepest cost-of-living gradients among nomad-visa countries. Mexico City central neighborhoods (Roma Norte, Condesa, Polanco) have climbed materially since 2021 and now land in mid-tier global expensive; Mérida, Oaxaca, and San Miguel de Allende stay budget-tier with strong infrastructure; Guadalajara and Playa del Carmen sit in between.

Long-term rent for a one-bedroom apartment, unfurnished or semi-furnished (early 2026):

  • CDMX — Roma Norte, Condesa, Juárez: $1,100–1,800
  • CDMX — Polanco, Lomas: $1,500–2,800
  • CDMX — outer (Narvarte, Del Valle): $700–1,000

Other recurring costs

  • Coworking: $120–220/month hot desk in CDMX (WeWork, Público Co., U-ERRE Work); $80–150 in Mérida/Oaxaca.
  • Mobile: $12–20/month for 10–25 GB (Telcel, Movistar, AT&T Mexico).
  • Home internet: $25–40 for 100–500 Mbps fiber (Totalplay, Izzi, Telmex Infinitum). Availability gaps in some smaller cities.
  • Public transport pass: ~$10/month CDMX Metrobus/Metro combined; most other cities cash-based.
  • Groceries, single: $180–300; couple $350–500.
  • Lunch at a comida corrida: $4–6 (popular Mexican-style set meal).
  • Mid-range restaurant: $15–25 dinner.
  • Coffee, specialty: $2.50–4 (CDMX/Oaxaca specialty scene is serious).
  • Gym: $30–60 chain (Smart Fit, Sports World).
  • Private health insurance for residents: $60–150/month (Axa, GNP, Allianz Mexico).

Picking your city

  • Mexico City — largest nomad scene, deepest professional density, best international dining, best domestic flight connectivity. Trade-offs: traffic, altitude (2,240m), and significantly higher cost than the rest of the country.
  • Guadalajara — Mexico's second-largest metro and emerging tech hub. Warmer climate, 40% cheaper than CDMX central, growing coworking footprint.
  • Mérida — colonial Yucatán capital, low cost, safe, hot (year-round). Strong expat community but smaller local scene for nomads under 40.
  • Playa del Carmen — Caribbean beach with a stable mid-size nomad population. Tourist-price volatility and humidity are the trade-offs.
  • Oaxaca — culture and food capital, lowest cost of the majors, slower pace, superb weather. Internet and power less consistent than CDMX or Guadalajara.
  • San Miguel de Allende — colonial tourism/retiree hub. Significant expat premium but beautiful altitude climate and excellent English.
