UAE Virtual Working Programme Requirements

Income, document, and eligibility requirements for the UAE Virtual Working Programme — including the health insurance and accommodation specifics.

The UAE Virtual Working Programme is a straightforward one-year residency permit for remote workers earning $5,000+/month. The application process is fast (~5 days) and fully online through the UAE Government portal, but requires specific documents that most applicants need to prepare carefully.

Eligibility

  • Non-UAE national, aged 18+.
  • Employed by or contracted to a foreign (non-UAE) entity, with remote-work permission.
  • Minimum income of $5,000/month (or equivalent in any convertible currency), documented for the last 3 months.
  • Valid passport with at least 6 months remaining.
  • Health insurance with UAE coverage for the full visa term.
  • Clean criminal record — typically not formally checked but UAE reserves the right.

Document checklist

  • Passport with 6+ months validity (scan of bio page)
  • Recent passport photograph (digital, white background)
  • Employment contract from foreign employer OR service agreements showing foreign clients and/or business registration (at least 1 year)
  • Employer letter confirming remote work + monthly salary of $5,000+
  • 3 months of bank statements showing qualifying income
  • Health insurance policy valid in the UAE for 12 months
  • Proof of accommodation in the UAE (rental agreement or hotel booking)
  • Medical fitness test certificate (taken at UAE medical center — arranged on arrival)
  • Emirates ID application — submitted alongside visa
  • Fee payment ($611 + ~$200 medical + ~$150 Emirates ID)

Application process — two routes

  • Online via UAE Government portal (default): submit documents through the Virtual Working Programme application. Decisions typically 5 business days.
  • In-person via an Amer/Tawdheef center: walk-in service centers in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and other Emirates can file applications. Slightly higher cost but assistance with paperwork.

Family application

Spouses and dependent children under 18 can be sponsored under the main applicant's residency. Each dependent has separate application fees (~$600 total per person including medical + Emirates ID). Dependents get full residency rights including access to UAE schools, healthcare, and banking.

Common rejection reasons

  • Income below $5,000 in any of the last 3 months.
  • Insufficient employer documentation — letter without letterhead, without specific salary amount, or without remote-work permission.
  • Passport too close to expiration (less than 6 months).
  • Prior UAE visa issues (overstays, deportations).
  • Incomplete health insurance coverage — must cover UAE specifically, including emergency.
