How to Apply for the UAE Virtual Working Programme

Step-by-step application for UAE's Virtual Working Programme — online submission, medical check, Emirates ID, and post-arrival admin.

The UAE Virtual Working Programme has one of the fastest processing times among nomad visas — typically 5 business days from submission to approval. The process is entirely online, simple, and predictable. Most applicants can plan their Dubai arrival within 3–4 weeks of deciding to apply.

Step 1 — Prepare income documentation

Gather:

  • Employment contract from foreign employer (English or Arabic translation if different)
  • Employer letter confirming remote-work permission + $5,000+ monthly salary (on official letterhead, signed)
  • 3 months of bank statements showing qualifying income deposits
  • For self-employed: business registration (1+ year operating) + 3 months of client invoices + bank deposits

Step 2 — Secure health insurance

Mandatory: health insurance covering the UAE for the full 12-month residency period. Options:

  • International plans (Cigna, Allianz Care, IMG) — $100–300/month, global coverage.
  • UAE-specific plans (Daman, AXA UAE) — $80–200/month, strong local provider network.

Budget carefully — UAE healthcare is expensive out of pocket; inadequate insurance is a common financial shock.

Step 3 — Submit application online

Go to the UAE Government portal and choose the federal virtual work residence visa or Dubai Virtual Working Programme service. Upload all documents and pay the applicable programme, insurance, and processing fees.

Step 4 — Receive approval (~5 business days)

Most complete applications approved within 5 business days. Approval email includes an electronic visa document and instructions for next steps.

Step 5 — Travel to UAE

Enter the UAE on your e-visa. You have 60 days to complete the in-country steps. Book accommodation for the first 30–60 days either at a hotel or short-term rental.

Step 6 — Medical fitness test

Within 30 days of arrival, book and complete a medical fitness test at a government-approved medical center. Cost ~$200. Required for Emirates ID issuance.

Step 7 — Emirates ID biometrics

Book an Emirates ID biometrics appointment through the UAE Pass app or Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP) website. Biometrics taken at service center. Emirates ID card issued within 5–10 business days. Cost ~$150.

Step 8 — Residence visa stamp

Final visa stamp in your passport is done through the ICP or Amer center. Cost included in application fees. This completes the residency process.

Step 9 — Post-arrival setup

  • Bank account — open with Emirates ID and salary certificate. Major banks: Emirates NBD, ADCB, HSBC, RAKBANK. Requires Emirates ID.
  • Driver's license — Foreign license valid for 6 months. Convert via RTA (Roads and Transport Authority) with Emirates ID.
  • Tax residency certificate — Optional. Apply through Federal Tax Authority after 183 days physical presence to formalize tax-resident status.
  • Dubai Metro Nol card — Optional travel pass for metro and buses.

Renewals

The visa is valid for one year and renewable upon re-application. Renewal happens through the relevant ICP/GDRFAD or Dubai portal and requires re-confirmation that you still meet the selected route's income and insurance requirements.

  • Passport too close to expiration.
  • Prior UAE immigration issues.
