Japan's digital nomad status is narrow and document-led. The core test is whether you are a qualifying foreign remote worker who will stay for no more than six months and keep work tied to overseas employment or clients.
Eligibility
- Remote work in Japan for a period not exceeding six months.
- Nationality or region eligibility under Japan's Immigration Services Agency list.
- Annual income of at least ¥10 million.
- Insurance covering death, injury, or illness during the stay, with medical treatment coverage of at least ¥10 million.
- No intention to work for a Japanese employer or serve the Japanese labor market as local employment.
Documents
- Visa application form with photo.
- Passport.
- Certificate of Eligibility, if available; otherwise supporting documents are submitted directly.
- Form explaining planned activities and period of stay in Japan.
- Income proof such as tax certificate, income certificate, employment contract, or business contract showing amount and term.
- Insurance certificate and policy summary proving the required coverage.
Family members
A spouse or child can apply under the accompanying digital-nomad category. They need their own application, passport, activity-period documents, insurance proof, and relationship evidence.
